A Place for Art and Encounters
To make its exquisite art collection accessible to a wide audience, in 2015 the Hilti Art Foundation opened its own museum building in Vaduz, right next to the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein.
It is a bright and clearly structured space which allows visitors to experience art in a tranquil and focused environment. Alternating exhibitions continually offer new perspectives on our collection, partly presented alongside loans from other institutions.
In addition, the building provides a platform for various projects and events that promote a lively interaction with the arts.
Architecture
Our museum building, designed by Morger + Dettli Architekten, Basel, and completed in May 2015, creates a harmonious ensemble with the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. The cubic form and the correlations in façade, achieved not least through the use of polished concrete, are an indication of the contextual and physical connection between the two buildings, as access to the Hilti Art Foundation is via the foyer of the Kunstmuseum.
The contrasting white and black color scheme testifies to respectful juxtaposition while also demonstrating deliberate independence. The design and arrangement of the three large halls mark a clear distinction between the access and exhibition areas. Walking through the building, visitors gain different impressions of space and light: indirect light from the stairwell in the basement, pure artificial light on the first floor, and a mixture of daylight and artificial light on the second floor.
The airy, light-flooded staircase separates and connects the rooms, is a designed passageway and architectural experience at once. The exhibition rooms are spatially contained and, owing to their shape, proportions and materials, are ideal for the presentation of art in all its forms.
