Collection

Already since the 1970s, members of the Hilti family have been collecting art. The systematic development of a collection containing high-ranking works of art began in 1997 and, with the establishment of the Hilti Art Foundation one year later, was set up for the long term. It comprises the collection of the Martin Hilti family trust and the private collection of Caroline and Michael Hilti.

The emphasis of our collection is placed both on European Classical Modernism – painting and sculpture from the period between around 1880 and 1950 – and on art from after the Second World War to the present day. Focal points are Expressionism, Cubism, Constructivism and Surrealism, Concrete Art, Zero and Minimal Art, as are abstract painterly tendencies after 1980.

Artists such as Max Beckmann, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Gotthard Graubner, Callum Innes, Imi Knoebel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Verena Loewensberg, Pablo Picasso, Sean Scully, Keith Sonnier, Thomas Struth and Sophie Taeuber-Arp are each represented with several works. In total, the collection currently comprises over five hundred paintings, sculptures, works on paper and photographs of museum quality. A passion for art and an ongoing commitment to finding artworks of exceptional quality are the underlying basis and driving force behind our continuously growing collection. Works aimed at shedding light on modernism as a time of curiosity, courage and innovation, of individuality and diversity – and as the roots of our present.

We want to actively make our collection accessible to as many people as possible: based on changing exhibitions in our museum building alongside analog and digital educational offerings, including a media guide that was launched in 2025 and is constantly growing.
